Vesti extends his lead

With a total of 153 points in the Championship and on the podium this year for the 7th time, Vesti manifests his leading position in F2 after this weekend at the Hungaroring outside of Budapest.

As the fastest man in practice, on provisional pole until the last push lap, when Vesti had to settle for the 3rd best time and see himself beaten by a mere 0.009 sec. to Australian Jack Doohan taking pole, the pace was set for a really strong weekend. Vesti now leads by 11 points down to P2 in the championship after a great 2nd place in Sunday's Feature Race.

"

I'm not the type getting hung up on the number of points per se. I try to do my job as best as possible every day and keep the focus on myself – and no one else. But of course it hit hard to see ones lead shrink from 20 points down to just 6 points as I did at Silverstone after having to retire due to a risky collision with a competitor. Being able to fight back as quickly as I just showed at the Hungaroring and extend my lead as soon as I get the chance is what matters to me. And probably also for quite a few others around me, smiles Vesti.

"

Vesti left his heavy fingerprint in Sunday's race from the start. With a fully committed and aggressive overtake in the very first corner that became a decisive moment and really defined the rest of the race for Vesti.

"

My plan was to overtake one of the two drivers in front at the start - preferably both. I got a good start and went on the outside of Victor Martins in the first turn. He jams his brakes and hits me. It was pure luck that nothing else happened. We both continued without it costing us anything. From there it was very much about matching the pit strategy of the strongest drivers and saving tires on a scorching hot track. Doohan was impossible for me to reach.

"

Saturday's Sprint Race was similar to Sunday's race, a rather boring affair watching from the outside. On a track that did not leave many overtaking opportunities, where the drivers were pretty much in one long row with almost the same distance to each other and a Vesti that, due to the reversed starting grid, started quite a ways down in the field, it did not result in any points.

As early as Thursday, Vesti is ready again, this time at the Belgian Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.
