WATKINS GLEN
Watkins Glen was going to be the race of the year for Frederik Vesti and his two teammates on a track known for being the fastest of its kind in North America. P1 in the first practice. P1 in the second practice and P2 in qualifying. Throughout the entire race, the team was in the fight for victory, which slipped away on the very last lap after nearly 6 hours of superiority on full display.
"From being in P1 we unfortunately found ourselves drop to the back of the large Hypercar field due to a pit stop issue. But acting as the comeback kid can be quite an exhilarating experience as you get to show what you are truly made of when you are fighting to recover. That became today's challenge. In my own stint, I overtook several cars .
"
Whelen Cadillac succeeded with a tremendous effort from both teams and drivers to come back and claim the absolute lead in the race again. But then, on the very last lap, the unthinkable happened as is sometimes the case when strategy and endurance racing fall out of alignment. We ran out of fuel.
"It was pure bad luck in the end. There was a car that stopped on the track, and a safety car was deployed, which meant that our strategy didn't hold up. There was only one other car that managed to finish without a pit stop.
"
"So yes, we could have done some things differently, but we were also just hit by misfortune. We learn every time, but of course, it's a huge frustration for all of us. We know that with the way things panned out today, it will be difficult to finish as the winner. But we can definitely be proud of being the fastest Cadillac in the field and by far the fastest car in the field all week. I have gotten to know a new track and learned some new things, and that's what matters. Our final result in the race was P5.
"
Vesti is back on the track, Monday. It will be another one of those special days not soon to be forgotten!
"I finish off at Watkins Glen with a tire test, 150 laps on the track, and 15 sets of tires. It's a racer's dream, and there's a lot to take away from that test, so I'm looking forward to it.
"
Vesti continues the month of July with various preparations, tests, and events around Europe.
